Increased Protection
Ports and terminals pose significant challenges for lighting due to harsh environmental conditions. Exposure to sea spray and salty air increases the risk of corrosion, particularly in docking areas. Extreme weather, including high winds and rain, is typical, requiring luminaires with a high IP rating to prevent water damage. Additionally, lighting fixtures mounted on high masts or structures must withstand continuous vibration and high wind loading, making durability a crucial consideration.

Rising Mercury
High temperatures challenge port and terminal lighting, particularly in hot climates like the Middle East where temperatures can exceed 45°C. LED lighting, designed with air ventilation and quality components tailored to the environment, can mitigate the associated issues such as lumen depreciation and colour shift, ensuring a prolonged lifespan and cost savings in the long run.
Our LED solutions keep cool even when temperatures soar, delivering superior performance even in hot climates. For example, our FL800R module uses AeroFlow® Cooling System to provide exceptional thermal management. Maximised heat dissipation enables a compact luminaire design, which can also be retrofitted onto existing masts.
Quality Light and lots of it
Ensuring adequate illuminance is paramount for port and terminal safety, enhancing visibility and reducing the risk of accidents. Different areas require varying levels of illuminance based on their specific risks (see detailed port lighting level examples below), with higher levels needed in task areas such as crane and connector pits. Generally, the recommended average horizontal illuminance at ground level for quay side areas is 50 lux. Whereas for customs handling areas the recommended average horizontal illuminance at ground level is 100 lux. LED luminaires, in higher colour temperatures and improved colour rendering, can significantly enhance working conditions and overall efficiencies within the port environment.

Note 1: Lux levels in the main container stacking levels are based on the assumption that there are no containers present. Refer to clause 07H.4.1.6.
Note 2: Lux levels for the pedestrian access routes shall be provided in all situations, i.e. with and without containers present. If these lux levels cannot be achieved over the full extent of the access routes from high mast light towers alone, then additional light fittings may be mounted onto the ends of reefer gantries (and/or onto other structures or light columns, subject to the Engineer’s review) at relevant locations to ensure the lux levels are achieved.
Energy Consumption Savings
Ports require continuous lighting due to their 24/7 operations, leading to high energy demands. Switching to LED lighting offers significant energy savings compared to conventional lighting. LED technology can increase light levels by 50%, reducing energy consumption in ports and terminals by up to 70%.
We implemented a new LED lighting solution at Container Terminal 2, which yielded tangible benefits for Hamad Port. Notably, the Port achieved a significant 46% reduction in energy consumption compared to the non-LED installation at Container Terminal 1, contributing to its sustainability objectives while enhancing operational efficiency. Excessive glare from individual luminaires in large areas like container yards and ports can hinder productivity and safety. Port and terminal lighting must be constant and uniform to prevent accidents caused by sharp contrasts in light levels. Preserving the Night Sky
Ports and terminals face pressure to minimise light pollution to preserve the night sky and limit disruption to local wildlife. Light trespass, the unintended spillage of light into neighbouring areas, must be avoided to prevent disturbance to adjacent commercial or residential properties. LEDs' directional nature helps direct light where needed, reducing unnecessary spillage.

Negating Dirty or Industrial Power
Voltage and current power line fluctuations are significant issues in transport and logistics facilities, including ports. Dirty power resulting from interference can lead to premature lighting failures and long-term damage to technology. Surge protection and remote monitoring equipment are crucial defences against power surges, especially in sensitive environments like ports. Additionally, circuit breakers, switches, and fuses should be reviewed and replaced if incompatible with incoming LED luminaires to ensure the reliability of the lighting system.
