Brighton & Hove’s iconic seafront is set to shine once again, as CU Phosco proudly supports Brighton & Hove City Council in the restoration of the historic lanterns that illuminate the city’s Grade II-listed cast iron lampposts. This ambitious project, which begins with a pilot of five columns in spring 2025, will see over 100 lanterns refurbished and upgraded, blending heritage craftsmanship with modern lighting technology.
A PARTNERSHIP BUILT ON HERITAGE
CU Phosco has a long-standing history with Brighton & Hove’s seafront lighting. Originally commissioned in 1982 to manufacture replica lanterns of the classic copper originals, we are honoured to once again play a pivotal role in preserving the character of this historic promenade. Using our original drawings, photographs, and a preserved sample luminaire from the previous scheme, we are ensuring that every detail remains true to the original aesthetic.
DELIVERING AUTHENTICITY WITH INNOVATION
As part of this restoration, CU Phosco will manufacture historically accurate lanterns that maintain the classic look and feel while incorporating energy-efficient LED technology. Designed to withstand the demanding coastal environment, the lanterns will undergo rigorous 2,000-hour salt spray testing to ensure their longevity and resilience.
The project includes upgrading outdated components with corrosion-resistant materials that offer improved longevity without compromising the lanterns’ heritage design. The integration of 3000K warm LED lighting will create a welcoming ambiance, ensuring Brighton’s seafront remains just as inviting by night as it is by day.
COMMITMENT TO PRESERVATION AND PROGRESS
Brighton & Hove City Council has worked closely with Historic England and a specialist metal conservator to ensure that the restoration meets the highest heritage standards. With funding from the council’s Carbon Neutral Fund and capital reserves, this initiative aligns with the city’s commitment to both cultural preservation and sustainability.
“This is a very proud moment for CU Phosco, after years of development to ensure that the lanterns replicate the original designs while incorporating sustainable, energy-efficient solutions. The project team has focused on delivering low-maintenance, long-lasting, and aesthetically faithful lighting, proving that heritage lanterns can be reproduced with circularity in mind,” said Matt Murray, Sales Director, CU Phosco.
A LASTING LEGACY
The first phase of the project will be completed by April 2025, with the full restoration expected by 2027. By breathing new life into these historic lanterns, CU Phosco is ensuring that Brighton & Hove’s seafront continues to be a beacon of heritage, craftsmanship, and innovation for generations to come.
