2025 marks an incredible milestone for Eric Grieve, Factory Manager, who has been a vital cog in the CU Phosco machine for the past 25 years. To celebrate, we sat down with him as a chance to reflect on his journey with us, the memories he’s made along the way, and how much he has seen the industry change.
Q: When did you join CU Phosco, and what roles have you held since?
Eric: I joined on January 1st, 2000, as the Factory Manager, and I’ve been in that role ever since. I was classed as a Senior Manager from the start, and since 2005, I’ve been involved on the Board of Directors. Over the years, I’ve worked on extending existing premises and advancing other CU facilities, which has been both challenging and rewarding.
Q: What’s kept you at CU Phosco all this time?
Eric: Honestly, the terms and conditions have played a part—they’ve allowed me to secure my family’s future, and I could not be more grateful. But more than that, it’s been the support and guidance of the Marques Family and other Directors within the business. Their dedication to keeping me motivated, feeling valued and supporting the improvement of the Westgate business has been the biggest reason I’ve stayed.
Q: How has the industry changed since you joined?
Eric: One of the most noticeable changes is the decline in steel fabrication businesses. It’s also becoming harder to find people interested in training to become fabricators, with a marked drop in interest. It’s a real shame as we have always been a nation that rolls its sleeves up and manufactures.
On a positive note, the securing of telecom structures has been a significant addition to our customer base, which has brought plenty of new opportunities and growth.
Q: What are some of your fondest memories of your time here so far?
Eric: There are so many! Some highlights include travelling first-class to China and visiting the Great Wall several times. The sights of China were incredible, and will stay with me forever.
I also have great memories of the early days working with Bob Gaskell, our Contract Services Director, and the transformation of Services when stationed at our Westgate facility.
Having my son join the business was another proud moment, as well as seeing him win the HEA HEMSA Industry Rising Star Award, it’s been fantastic to see his hard work pay off.
I can’t forget the occasions at our Head Office in Ware—whether social or business events, they’ve been memorable. The World Cup final at Lords stands out as a truly special event.
Eric’s contributions over the past 25 years have been integral to CU Phosco’s success, particularly at our Westgate facility. His dedication, leadership, and expertise continue to inspire us all.
Thank you, Eric, for an incredible 25 years of service—and here’s to many more!
